To make the tools work withEndNote X7.5 and later orEndNote online andWord 2016 15.23 or later do the following:

EndNote X7.5 and later: Open EndNote, go to the EndNote X7 menu and choose "About EndNote X7" and verify that the about window showsEndNote X7.5 (Bld 11052) or later. You can downloadEndNote X7.5 Update here.EndNote online: You can download the latest EndNote online tools here.
Open Word. In Word, click on the Word menu and select About Word. Make sure this reads at least version 15.23. If you do not have this version click on the Help menu and select Check for Updates. Follow the steps to update Word. If the Auto Update is not able to locate latest version for some reason, you can download the update here
Note:If you updatedWord 2016 to the 64-bit version, be sure to update EndNote to version X7.6 for compatibility. If you have not updated EndNote and have the update forWord 2016, you will see the message "Word was unable to load an add-in."
EndNote X7: Close Word and go to EndNote.
EndNote online: Close word and install the tools using the installer, Drag the Cite While You Write folder to your applications folder then open that folder and run the CWYW_Installer file found here. If it's not working after proceed to the next set of instructions.
Click the EndNote menu and select "Customizer."
Check the box in front of the "Cite While You Write" option.
Click next until the Customizer is finished. Open a library.
Then openWord 2016 and check the Ribbon for theEndNotetab. (NOTE: The EndNote CWYW tools no longer appear under the Tools menu; rather appears as a separate tab in Word)

You should now see theEndNotetab in the Ribbon ofWord 2016. If you are not seeing theEndNotetab, follow these steps:

Close Word and EndNote.
Open your hard drive and go to the following folder:
EndNote X7: Applications: EndNote X7: Cite While You Write
EndNote online: Applications: Cite While You Write:Cite While You Write
Copy the file "EndNote CWYW Word 2016.bundle" by highlighting the file and going to "Edit > Copy."
NOTE: If you do not see the "EndNote CWYW Word 2016.bundle" file in the "Applications: EndNote X7: Cite While You Write" folder (or if this file is not the most up to date version), you can follow these steps:
1. Download a copy of the latest EndNote online tools here.
2. Run this file and follow the steps to install the tools in Word.
3. Skip step 3.
Go to the folder "[Hard Drive Name] : Library : Application Support : Microsoft : Office365 : User Content : Startup : Word" and paste the file, "Edit > Paste."
Note: If you have trouble finding the above location you need to click on Finder (in the Dock the icon of a face) to the right of Finder click on the Go menu then click on Computer then click on the Macintosh Hard Drive. You should then be able to follow the path above.
Note: In non-English versions of Word, the folder named "Startup" may be called "Start" or be in the localized language of Word.
Start Word, go to "Word > Preferences" and click on "File Locations."
If the Startup folder is set to any location, highlight "Startup" and click on "Reset."
Click "OK" and Quit Word.
Start EndNote and then start Word.

EndNote X7.6 and X7.7: Tools Not Updating

If you have updatedEndNote X7 to versionX7.6 (Bld 11666) and X7.7 (11722) but the "EndNote CWYW Word 2016.bundle" file in the "Applications: EndNote X7: Cite While You Write" folder has not been updated, please follow these steps:

Download a copy of the latest EndNote online tools here.
Run this file and follow the steps to install the tools in Word.
Start Word. If the tab in Word reads EndNote instead ofEndNote X7, see this article to swap the tools.

Grant Access:

When you first launch MicrosoftWord 2016 after installing theEndNote X7.5or the EndNote online CWYW tools, you will see a dialog asking to Grant Access.

"EndNote needs access to the file named 'com.ThomsonResearchSoft.EndNote.plist'. Select this file to grant access."

The file should already be selected in the correct location (Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Preferences). Simply click Grant Access the first time and it should not prompt you again. This is due toWord 2016 being a "sandboxed application."

Missing 'com.ThomsonResearchSoft.EndNote.plist' file:

If the 'com.ThomsonResearchSoft.EndNote.plist' file is missing from the list, please follow these steps:

· Click Cancel when prompted to Grant Access.

· Click the Word menu and select Quit Word.

· Download the 'com.ThomsonResearchSoft.EndNote.zip' archive from the Attachments section to the right of the article.

· Unzip this file to extract the 'com.ThomsonResearchSoft.EndNote.plist' file.

· Place this file in the "Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Preferences" folder.

Note: To get to the Library folder, hold down the "option" key on your keyboard and go to the "Go" Menu and choose "Library".

· Restart Word.

· Grant Access to the 'com.ThomsonResearchSoft.EndNote.plist' file in the "Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Preferences" folder.

Should there be any issue with this process and permission not getting properly granted, do the following:

Quit Word, Go to the Go menu and hold down the option key and choose "Library" here, go to the containers folder and find and remove the "com.microsoft.Word" folder
Reboot and empty the Trash.
Run the Customizer forEndNote X7 or the CWYW_Installer file forEndNote online to install the tools.

Tools are Present, but not responsive:
If you are seeing theEndNote X7 orEndNote tab in the ribbon, but the commands are not functional or only beep or do nothing when clicked, some settings may need to be reset. Do the following to resolve this:

Create a compressed backup of the library.
Quit EndNote and Word.
Open Finder, hold down the "option" key on your keyboard and go to the "Go" Menu and choose "Library" then open the "Preferences" folder.
Remove the "com.ThomsonResearchSoft.EndNote.plist" file.
Browse to is the "[Hard Drive Name] : Library : Application Support : Microsoft : Office365 : User Content : Startup : Word" folder.
Delete the "EndNote CWYW Word 2016.bundle" file.
Launch EndNote X7.
Run the Customizer to install the Cite While You Write tools. WithEndNote online, run the CWYW_Installer in the Cite While You Write folder in applications.

Tools are Missing, but everything appears correctly configured:
If the issues persist, Try resetting your word preferences:

Quit EndNote, Word and any Microsoft application.
Find and drag the Nomal.dotm template to your desktop.
To access this folder, please click on the Go menu of your Finder and then press the "Option" key on your keyboard. Library should then appear as an option in the Go menu. Click this and proceed to Group Containers : UBF8T346G9.Office : User Content : Templates to find the Normal.dotm file.
Rename this file Abnormal.old
Look for any pre-2016 Normal templates on your computer. Drag them to the desktop and rename. The location would depend on the version of Word:
- Word 2008 and 2011: Click on the Go menu of your Finder and then press the "Option" key on your keyboard. Library should then appear as an option in the Go menu. Click this and proceed to Application Support:Microsoft:Office:User Templates to find the Normal.dotm file.
- Word 2004: Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Documents:Microsoft User Data.
- Word X:Microsoft Office X:Templates.
Remove or rename the following files/folders if they exist:
Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library: Containers: com.microsoft.Word
Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Preferences:Microsoft:Word Settings (10)
Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Preferences:Microsoft:Word Settings (11)
Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Preferences:com.Microsoft.Word.plist
Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Preferences:Microsoft:Office 2011 (The entire folder would need to be renamed or removed here)
Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Preferences:Microsoft:Office 2008 (The entire folder would need to be renamed or removed here)
Restart your computer.
Empty the Trash.
